Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 Review: A Powerful Iteration with a Gaping Opportunity for Innovation

Samsung's recent Unpacked event in Seoul showcased its new folding gadgets, with the Galaxy Z Fold5 taking the spotlight. While the device boasts an updated design and internal upgrades, it falls short of delivering a groundbreaking experience that truly justifies an upgrade.

Closing the Gap: A Slight Upgrade in Design

One of the touted improvements of the Galaxy Z Fold5 is its "Flex Hinge" upgrade, which effectively closes the gap between the folds. This sleek design enhancement contributes to a more seamless opening and closing experience and results in a lighter and slimmer form factor.

While the aesthetics are certainly polished, it's hard to ignore the fact that the external design hasn't seen a significant overhaul since the Fold4. It's clear that more innovation is needed to truly set the device apart.

Hidden Power: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Performance

Under the surface, the Galaxy Z Fold5 boasts a significant upgrade in the form of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

This specially crafted "Mobile Platform for Galaxy" promises improved performance, better graphics, and extended battery life.

The device impressively handles graphics-intensive tasks, including gaming, with ease. The 7.6-inch main display's 120Hz refresh rate and S Pen compatibility contribute to a smooth and enjoyable user experience.

The advanced cooling system helps maintain consistent performance, although some minor heating is noticeable during extended use.

Camera Quality: Sturdy Snapper with Incremental Improvements

The triple-lens camera system on the Fold5 remains reliable, delivering crisp and well-detailed photos and videos. The faster chip enhances the overall photography experience, making shooting in various lighting conditions smoother.

However, the camera system's specs haven't seen notable changes from its predecessor, the Fold4.

While the camera's performance is commendable, it's worth noting that night shots can exhibit some overexposure in dark areas. The camera setup excels in well-lit settings but leaves room for improvement in low-light scenarios.

Battery Efficiency: Gen 2 Chip Paying Dividends

The integration of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip positively impacts battery life. Users can expect a solid day of use with around 30% battery remaining by nightfall. The Fold5's battery efficiency shines through in a one-hour full-brightness YouTube test, where it loses only 5% battery – a significant improvement over the Fold4 and Fold3. Quick charging capabilities are also notable, as the device can reach 50% in just half an hour.

Verdict: A Strong Device, But Longing for Innovation

The Galaxy Z Fold5 undoubtedly showcases Samsung's commitment to refining its foldable technology. While the closed gap and internal improvements make it the most polished iteration in the series, the overall experience lacks the innovation needed to warrant an upgrade for many users.

As the fifth iteration of the Fold series, it's natural to anticipate a more significant design overhaul at this point.

The question remains: Will Samsung deliver a true breakthrough in its next iteration, or will consumers have to wait longer for the revolutionary design they desire? With competitors like Apple stepping up their innovation game, the pressure is on for Samsung to truly redefine the foldable smartphone landscape.
